Cursive H: How to Write Uppercase & Lowercase H

Cursive h is a tall loop stem like l, with a hump added on the right. The capital H is built from two separate stems and a crossbar.

Capital H in cursive: step by step

  1. 1Start near the top line with a small loop and draw the first stem down to the baseline.
  2. 2Lift your pen, return to the top and draw the second stem down.
  3. 3Lift again and add a crossbar between the stems at about the midline.

Lowercase h in cursive: step by step

  1. 1Start on the baseline and swing up to the top line.
  2. 2Loop over at the top and come straight down to the baseline.
  3. 3Retrace up the stem to about the midline.
  4. 4Curve over to the right in a hump, come down to the baseline and sweep into the exit stroke.

How cursive h joins other letters

In 'th' the crossbar of the t and the loop of the h are often drawn together. Take the exit from the baseline of the h like any other letter that ends low.

Common mistakes with cursive h

A hump that starts at the baseline

The hump should leave the stem at the midline. If it starts lower, h can look like a b or a tall n.

Stems that lean apart

On capital H, both stems should share the same slant. If they drift, the letter looks like an A without its peak.
