Cursive G: How to Write Uppercase & Lowercase G

Cursive g combines an a-shaped oval with a long stem that drops below the baseline and loops back. Once a feels natural, g is the same oval with one extra move.

Common mistakes with cursive g

Looping the wrong way

The lower loop of g goes to the left and sweeps back up to the right. A right-hand loop looks like a q.

A stem too short

The loop needs room below the line. If you run out of space on lined paper, give g more descender room by writing the letters above it a little smaller.

Cursive g vs q: Cursive g loops to the left under the line; q ends with a hook to the right. The loop direction is the only difference below the baseline. See cursive Q →

Cursive G questions

Does the loop of a cursive g go left or right?

Left. The stem drops below the baseline, loops to the left and sweeps back up to the right to connect to the next letter.
