Digits 0–9
Cursive Numbers 0–9
Cursive numbers are written like print numbers, with the same slight lean as the letters and on the same lines. Here is each digit with its stroke order.
How to write each number in cursive
Numbered dots show where each stroke starts. Digits are written alone; they do not join the way letters do.
Number 0
Start near the top and curve counterclockwise around a smooth oval. Close it at the top.
Number 1
Start with a short diagonal flag up to the top, then draw one straight line down to the baseline.
Number 2
Curve over the top, sweep in a diagonal to the lower left, then draw a straight line along the baseline to the right.
Number 3
Curve out and back to the middle for the top bump, then repeat larger for the bottom bump and finish with a small curl.
Number 4
Draw a diagonal down to the midline and across to the right in one stroke. Lift, then draw the vertical line from the top to the baseline.
Number 5
Draw a flat line across the top, drop to the midline, then curve around the bowl and finish near the baseline.
Number 6
Start at the top and curve down the left side into a loop at the bottom. The loop closes near the middle.
Number 7
Draw a short line across the top, then a straight diagonal down to the baseline.
Number 8
Start at the top, curve left, cross diagonally to the lower right, loop around the bottom and come back up to cross in the middle.
Number 9
Draw a small oval at the top, then pull a straight line down from its right side to the baseline.

Are there cursive numbers?
Cursive handwriting has no separate set of numerals the way it has capital and lowercase letters. Numbers are written in a handwriting style that matches the letters: upright or slightly slanted, rounded and drawn in one flowing movement. Some older styles, such as Palmer, use slightly different forms for 1, 4 and 7, but most school programs teach the shapes shown here.
Two habits make numbers neater: keep every digit the same height as a capital letter, and give each one clear space. In a date or a phone number, uneven digits are much easier to misread than uneven letters.

Cursive number questions
Do you connect numbers in cursive?
Usually not. Each digit is written separately. Connecting them makes numbers harder to read, which matters most in dates, amounts and phone numbers.
How do you write a 7 in cursive?
A short line across the top and a straight diagonal down to the baseline. Some styles add a short crossbar through the stem, but the plain form is the most common.
Are cursive numbers the same as fancy numbers?
No. Fancy or decorative numerals come from fonts. Handwritten cursive numbers are simpler and meant to be written quickly and clearly.
