Cursive B: How to Write Uppercase & Lowercase B

Cursive b starts with a tall loop, like an l, and then adds a bowl at the bottom. Get the loop height right and the rest of the letter falls into place.

Capital B in cursive: step by step

  1. 1Start near the top line and draw a straight stem down to the baseline.
  2. 2Lift your pen and return to the top of the stem.
  3. 3Draw a bowl out to the right and back to the stem at the midline, then a larger bowl below it, curling back to the baseline.

Lowercase b in cursive: step by step

  1. 1Start on the baseline and swing up in a slanted line to the top line.
  2. 2Loop over at the top and come straight back down to the baseline.
  3. 3Curve right and up to the midline to form the bowl.
  4. 4Finish with a small stroke across the top of the bowl so b can join the next letter.

Because b ends at the midline, it joins the next letter with a horizontal stroke. Letters that start high, like o and e, are the easiest to link.

Common mistakes with cursive b

A loop that is too short

A b with a stubby loop looks like a lowercase h or a misshapen l. Aim for the top line, two times the height of a small letter.

A bowl that never meets the stem

If the bowl floats away from the stem, the b becomes hard to read. Bring the bowl back to touch the stem.
