How to use the practice generator
- Enter a name, a word or a short phrase. Up to 40 letters, digits and basic punctuation are drawn.
- Choose a style. Model + trace gives one solid copy followed by dotted ones; Trace only gives all dotted copies; Copy only gives solid copies to write beside.
- Pick the letter case. Names usually read best capitalized; use lowercase to practice joins without capitals.
- Press Print, or Download PDF to save it. The preview shows exactly what will print.
A tracing routine: from dotted letters to writing from memory
One sheet is rarely enough to learn a word. A short sequence of different sheets moves you from following the shape to producing it yourself.
- Model + trace. Make one sheet of the word or name with a solid example followed by dotted copies. Trace slowly, and say the stroke order aloud.
- Trace only. Print the same word with every copy dotted. Now you must remember where each letter starts.
- Copy only. Print solid copies and write beside each one. Compare height and slant as you go.
- From memory. Print blank lines only (set Practice lines low and Blank lines high) and write the word without a model.
Five to ten minutes on a single word is plenty. For letters that keep going wrong, read the matching lesson, such as cursive g or cursive t, before you trace them again.
Ideas for using it
- Practice a child's own name first. It is the word they will write most.
- Make a sheet from a spelling list: one word per sheet in large size, or a short phrase in small size.
- Use Capitalized and lowercase on the same name to compare how the first letter differs.
- Work out how a letter is built on its lesson page, such as cursive a or cursive e, before tracing it in a word.
Make a cursive worksheet for any word, name or spelling list
This cursive worksheet generator works as a free cursive worksheet maker: type any name, word or short phrase and print a tracing sheet in seconds. It is useful when a ready-made PDF does not have the words you need.
- Names: a child's own name is the word they will write most, so start there.
- Spelling lists: make one sheet per word so each gets a full page of tracing.
- Letter practice: type a short run such as abcdefghijklm and then nopqrstuvwxyz, or use the ready-made cursive worksheets with a full page for each letter.
- Numbers: digits are included, and there is a cursive numbers practice sheet too.
A few choices make a sheet easier to use. Choose the large size for young children and the small size for adults, and print on paper that does not bleed through; our guide to pens and paper for cursive practice has suggestions. If a child finds handwriting hard, this guide on dyslexia and dysgraphia explains why short, multisensory sessions work best.
